White blood cells are a key to the cancer well-known as leukemia. The sudden increase of immature, abnormal white blood cells in an individual’s body disabling the bone marrow to produce healthy blood cells that can protect and fight for the body causes this cancer. The preliminary steps for the production of the white blood cells in the body are the myeloids.  Myeloids are the blood stem cells which on undergoing differentiation results in the white blood cells which are the important part of the immune system in an individual’s body to function suitably against any infections and damage in tissues. The myeloid differentiation is a vital step to result white blood cells to turn into leukemia. Deficiency occurring during the myeloid differentiation can lead into the abnormal production of these white blood cells.

Recent research carried out on mouse embryonic cells by converting them into myeloid progenitor cells. While screening the number of enzymes that are responsible in the various steps for processing cell development, differentiation, a protein inhibitor molecule mTOR was identified. This molecule was found play an important role in myeloid differentiation.

This molecule can help in identifying the pathway of the normal myeloid differentiation, thus providing a key to unfold the mechanism or the events when the differentiation turns out to be abnormal thus producing immature white blood cells and leading leukemia. Further studies can also throw light on the constructing drugs that can support the myeloid differentiation or prevent myeloid diseases.
